Michael Carrick Manchester United 2026 interim head coach appointed ahead of City derby

Michael Carrick has agreed to take charge of Manchester United as interim head coach, with former England assistant Steve Holland set to join him as number two. The appointment comes just days before United’s Premier League derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Carrick’s backroom staff will include Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion, bringing a mix of coaching and playing experience to the dugout. The 44-year-old signed off on the deal late Monday, with the official announcement expected Tuesday once paperwork is completed.

United parted ways with Ruben Amorim on 5 January after 14 months in charge, handing caretaker duties to Darren Fletcher for two matches. Carrick now steps in for a second spell as temporary boss, having previously overseen three games following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal in 2021.

The timing of the appointment is significant, with United preparing for one of their biggest fixtures of the season. Carrick’s leadership will be tested immediately against Pep Guardiola’s City, who remain fierce rivals in the title race.

For Carrick, this is another chance to prove his credentials at the highest level. His previous stint brought stability in a turbulent period, and the club will hope he can deliver the same impact as United look to reset their campaign.
