Macclesfield striker Ethan McLeod dies aged 21 after tragic M1 car crash
Macclesfield FC are in mourning after young forward Ethan McLeod was killed in a car accident on the M1 on Tuesday night. The 21-year-old was travelling home from a National League North match when tragedy struck.
McLeod had been part of the Silkmen squad for their trip to Bedford Town, coming on as a substitute, before the fatal crash near Northampton at around 10.40pm. His white Mercedes collided with a barrier, with emergency services rushing to the scene, but the player sadly died.
The club confirmed the heartbreaking news on Wednesday, describing McLeod as “incredibly talented” and a “well-respected member” of the dressing room. In an emotional statement, Macclesfield said the loss has devastated everyone connected with the club and no words was enough to express the pain being felt.
McLeod joined Wolves’ academy at just seven years old and came through the system at Molineux. He featured for their Under-21s in the EFL Trophy but never made a senior appearance, before spells on loan and short stays with Alvechurch, Rushall Olympic and Stourbridge.
The Birmingham-born striker arrived at Macclesfield in July following a successful trial and quickly made an impression. He played seven times for the Silkmen, scoring three goals, including on his debut in an FA Cup qualifier against Atherton LR and a late strike in a 1-1 draw with King’s Lynn Town earlier this month.
Macclesfield said McLeod’s “lust for life” and “unwavering work ethic” stood out, adding that his unique smile would never be forgotten. The club admitted the mental scars left behind will never fully heal, but insisted his legacy at the club will live on.
Wolves also paid tribute, saying they was “heartbroken” by the loss of their former player. The Premier League side confirmed they will provide support to McLeod’s family, including his younger brother Conor, who currently plays for Wolves’ Under-21s. A minute’s silence will be held before Wolves’ home match against Brentford on Saturday.
Supporters have also been paying their respects. The Silkmen Supporters’ Trust called McLeod “one of our own”, with fans remembering a nippy forward who was improving every week and always happy to chat with supporters after matches.
Macclesfield are due to play Alfreton Town on Saturday, though the club has yet to confirm whether the fixture will go ahead. For now, football feels secondary. As one fan put it, Ethan McLeod will be forever a Silkman.
