Liverpool Plot Shock Move for Real Madrid Star Camavinga as Arne Slot Scrambles to Save Shaky Title Defence
Liverpool are weighing up a sensational swoop for Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, with Arne Slot pushing hard for reinforcements after the Reds’ title defence has basically fallen to bits before Christmas. Despite blowing more than £450m on new arrivals in the summer, the champions are already back in the market as their season threatens to unravel completely.
Just six months ago, Liverpool was on cloud nine. Slot breezed into Anfield, delivered the Premier League title in his debut campaign, and then the club doubled down with a transfer window that looked like something out of Football Manager. Florian Wirtz arrived for a record £116m, Alexander Isak followed for £125m in a controversial late swoop, and the Reds smashed the British transfer record twice in one month. Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez were brought in to overhaul the full-back roles after Trent Alexander-Arnold left for Madrid and Andy Robertson’s legs wasn’t quite what they used to be.
At first, it all looked like more genius from the Liverpool recruitment machine. Five league wins on the spin, eight victories from the first nine games in all competitions, and talk of another dominant season. Then the wheels didn’t just fall off – they flew into the Mersey. Before the weekend’s 2–0 win over West Ham, Liverpool had lost nine of their previous 12 matches, the kind of collapse that has fans genuinely wondering whether Slot has the chops to steady a ship that’s taking on water fast.
Now comes the latest twist: sources told CaughtOffside that Slot wants Camavinga badly, calling him a “necessary” signing to fix a midfield that’s gone alarmingly flat. Madrid don’t want to sell, but there has been internal chatter at the Bernabéu about the Frenchman’s future — and at €60m he wouldn’t exactly be cheap, but he would free up funds if Los Blancos need to refresh elsewhere. The problem? Everyone wants him. Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, PSG and Bayern Munich are all sniffing around if this turns into a proper transfer scrap.
Camavinga himself insists he’s “very happy” in Madrid. To be fair, he’s already won it all there — two Champions Leagues, two La Liga titles, and a key role under both Carlo Ancelotti and now Xabi Alonso. But injuries have stalled his momentum and he’s started just five matches this season, clocking 563 minutes across 14 appearances. Alonso remains a big admirer, saying in September: “He has enormous potential… and there’s a place for him within the project.” Madrid also have him tied down until 2029, so prising him away won’t be easy.
Liverpool, meanwhile, don’t have time to lick wounds. December’s fixture list is brutal. Sunderland — flying high after promotion — arrive at Anfield next, followed by tricky games against Brighton and Tottenham. Slot knows this run might define whether Liverpool can claw their way back into the title race or end up scrapping for top four by February.
And that’s why Camavinga’s name is suddenly on the table. The Reds need energy, control, and a bit of stardust in midfield — and the 23-year-old ticks all the boxes. Whether Madrid actually let him go is another story entirely. But with Liverpool’s season wobbling badly, they might just try anyway.
