Cole Palmer Cleared for Chelsea Return in Crunch Clash With Arsenal

Chelsea have been handed a massive lift ahead of Sunday’s top-of-the-table dust-up with Arsenal, with Cole Palmer declared fit to play after his bizarre toe fracture scare.

The 23-year-old forward was ruled out after smashing his toe on a door last week – a painful mishap that saw him miss the wins over Burnley and Barcelona. It looked like another chapter in what’s been a stop-start season for the England international, who’s only managed five appearances so far across all competitions.

But Enzo Maresca insisted on Friday that his star man is ready to go. “He is available to start,” the Chelsea boss said, looking visibly relieved. “Everyone is happy, the team-mates are happy, we are all happy… the most important thing is Cole is happy because a footballer wants to play games. He is our best player, we’re happy he is back. We need to give him time to be 100% fit.”

Only last week Maresca hinted the clash might’ve come too soon for Palmer, with the Blues bracing for the worst. His absence would’ve been a proper blow too, given Chelsea are chasing Arsenal at the summit and could haul themselves within three points with a win at Stamford Bridge, kick-off 16:30 GMT.

Palmer’s last outing was the 2–1 defeat at Manchester United on 20 September. Chelsea’s played 13 matches since then — winning 10, losing two and drawing one — hardly the form of a side relying on one man. Still, his influence is no secret. Signed from Manchester City for £40m in 2023, he’s topped the club’s scoring charts in each of his two Premier League seasons, rattling in 22 goals in his debut campaign and 15 more last term.

In his absence, summer signing Estevao Willian has been electric, bagging five goals and forcing himself into Maresca’s thoughts. The manager hinted the pair could line up together. “Depends on the game plan,” he shrugged. “For sure they are exciting… fans excited, we also are excited. We need always balance between two.”

And that’s where the headache begins. Chelsea suddenly has options – proper ones. Pedro Neto has been flying, while Jamie Gittens and Alejandro Garnacho has stepped up. Enzo Fernandez, meanwhile, leads the club’s combined goals-and-assists tally.

On paper, the flashiest front four would be Joao Pedro as the No.9, Neto on the left, Palmer in the hole and Estevao wide right. But Maresca may decide to respect an Arsenal side still bristling with title credentials, meaning Palmer could yet start on the bench as Chelsea look for control and graft over glamour.

Either way, his return adds another layer to an already tasty clash. Victory drags Chelsea right back into the title conversation; defeat hands Arsenal breathing room. Stamford Bridge will be bouncing — and after a month out, Palmer looks ready to join the party.
