Bruno Fernandes Manchester United captain future update January 2026
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has no plans to leave Old Trafford during the January transfer window, despite recent reports suggesting he was considering his future following the dismissal of head coach Ruben Amorim.
Concerns were raised when Fernandes met Amorim’s assistant Carlos Fernandes shortly after the sacking, but sources close to the situation insist the midfielder remains focused on United. The upheaval has seen Darren Fletcher step in for two matches before Michael Carrick was appointed caretaker until the end of the season.
Fernandes, 31, has always intended to reassess his position in the summer, when he will have one year left on his contract. Last year he rejected a lucrative offer from Al-Hilal and, while interest from the Saudi Pro League continues, he is expected to prioritise staying in Europe if he does eventually move on.
The Portugal international recently admitted he was hurt by learning United had been open to selling him, claiming senior officials lacked the courage to tell him directly, with Amorim preferring to keep him in the squad.
For now, Fernandes remains committed to United’s campaign under Carrick, with his leadership seen as vital as the club navigates a transitional period.
