Bonmati makes it three in a row as Wiegman lands fifth Fifa crown at awards night
Aitana Bonmati has once again been crowned the best player in women’s football, with the Barcelona star lifting the Fifa Best award for a third straight year as England boss Sarina Wiegman picked up yet another coaching honour.
Bonmati, 27, was the standout name at the ceremony after another huge season for club and country. The Spain midfielder shone at Euro 2025, where she was named player of the tournament despite ending up on the losing side as England edged the final on penalties.
At club level, Bonmati helped Barcelona sweep up a domestic treble, scoring 12 league goals and laying on six assists in La Liga F. Europe was the one that got away, though, with Barca falling short against Arsenal in the Champions League final.
Still, her impact was impossible to ignore. Bonmati registered nine goal involvements in 11 Champions League games and was named Uefa’s player of the season, including a goal in the 4-1 semi-final second-leg win at Chelsea. She also added a third Ballon d’Or in September, becoming the first player to do so.
“I am grateful to have the honour,” Bonmati said. “If it wasn’t for all the players, coaches and the fans, I would not win it – but I will enjoy.” She beat off competition from Arsenal’s Mariona Caldentey and former winner Alexia Putellas, while PSG’s Ousmane Dembele took the men’s prize.
Wiegman, meanwhile, continued to set the standard on the touchline. The England manager was named women’s coach of the year for a fifth time after steering the Lionesses to back-to-back European titles, despite a shaky run of results and several retirements heading into the tournament.
“It’s an absolute honour to receive this award again,” Wiegman said. “This is for the players and staff. We showed conviction, belief and togetherness to win another Euros.” She saw off Chelsea’s Sonia Bompastor and Arsenal boss Renee Slegers to take the prize.
There was more England success as Hannah Hampton was named best women’s goalkeeper. The Chelsea stopper won the Golden Glove at Euro 2025 and was ever-present during the Blues’ unbeaten WSL campaign, later thanking both Wiegman and Bompastor for their faith.
Barcelona’s dominance showed again in the Best XI, with six players from the Spanish giants included. England quartet Hampton, Lucy Bronze, Leah Williamson and Alessia Russo also made the cut, underlining the Lionesses’ growing influence as attention now turns towards World Cup qualifying and the next chapter in a golden era.
